PHOTOGRAPHER : RICHARD SANDLER @ohstop1946
i wake early, excited to shoot on the (post-colonial) streets, a fisherman trawling
the pavement for pictures. i ride the subway to manhattan; my camera is especially ready in the underground.
the process is deceptively simple:
i use two old-school leica’s with tri-x film, one has a 28mm lens, the other a 35mm lens.
i ‘zone focus’ to be ready, the strobe is ready too.
something intriguing catches my eye….
in the moment of exposure i remind myself to frame carefully and be calm, like the center of a cyclone.
i have a quick first step, thanks to an athletic youth and a pair stan smith’s.
i’m looking for the ‘extraordinary within the ordinary,’ for ‘the fly in the ointment,’ the ‘lie that tells a (wordless) truth.’
chance operation is my mistress and i beseech the photo-goddess to smile upon me, and she does.
at day’s end i return home to my darkroom and develop one to eight rolls of film. i make
contact sheets and some work prints and maybe i got lucky, if not, tomorrow, hopefully, is another day to repeat the above.
years pass in the blink of an eye. duel magazine wants to publish my work, and i am very glad.
